Westchester County Historical Society-Librarian

The Westchester County Historical Society, a library and research center founded in 1874 and located in Elmsford, New York, is seeking a librarian who will be responsible for managing all aspects of the Society's holdings on Westchester County history. These holdings number in the low six figures and include books, maps, manuscripts, photographs, etc. The work-week is 30 hours, Monday through Thursday.

Job description:

  • actively seeks out acquisitions through catalogues, as well as individuals and organizations
  • manages the acquisition/deaccession process
  • catalogues and processes all incoming materials
  • indexes periodical articles and maintains a current author/subject index for the WCHS quarterly magazine
  • responds to all reference by mail requests
  • identifies conservation projects, finds appropriate funding sources and writes grant proposals
  • serves as ex-officio member of the board of trustees
  • supervises the work of the assistant librarian and works closely with the executive director

Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLS degree, with some experience with archives and/or special collections
  • five or more years of professional library experience
  • solid experience with the latest technological advances relating to library work
  • ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and good judgment
  • able to lift up to 40 lbs.

Compensation: minimum starting salary of $42,500
